Ward Nine
Ward Nine is a story of wealth, power, and self-made immortality of characters intertwined in religious extremism, science, black magic, and the twisted cultural beliefs of people across Africa and beyond.
It is an exposure of social class divisions, the struggles on the ladder, and the rise and fall of pseudo empires that exist out of the public's eyes. It is where purported good meets the notion of evil. The mission: to unveil the darkest secrets of the land by way of satire, humor, and fantasy.
Ward Nine ends in the triumph of love, in its rawest and purest form.
It is a story of love causing pain and facilitating simultaneous healing. In the end, it's not all tears. There is love and peace in doing the things that one loves most.
The Village Girl
This is a story of Sandra, who unbeknownst to her, was conceived as a result of rape. Sandra grew up convinced that her mother abandoned her and ran off to the city.
Sandra is left in the care of her maternal grandmother who ensures Sandra is loved, provided for, and has access to education; her grandmother even sells everything to ensure Sandra can attend the secondary school of her dreams. To pay her back, Sandra works hard, stays at the top of her class, and takes care of her duties at home.
A friend, Dau, tutors Sandra and treats her to walks by the river. Their budding love is secretive and sweet.
When her beloved Granny is gruesomely killed, Sandra is heartbroken, but a man - whom she at the time does not know who is - pulls Sandra out of the darkness and reunites her with her mother in the city, where she despite setbacks and struggles gets a chance to create a brighter future for herself and her family.
Non-Fiction Books
Handbook For Pre-teen Girls
This book discusses and explains the many issues facing young girls as they are heading towards puberty - issues like the development of the body, friendship, self-esteem, health, hygiene, menstruation, sexuality, rights and freedom, and more. The subjects are discussed and dealt with in an age-appropriate language and manner.
The Author is a high school teacher with three pre-teen girls, and her personal, engaging, and often humorous style speaks directly to the reader. Charming illustrations add to the lighthearted tone.
The book is unique in the sense that is leaves room for note-taking, observations, thoughts, and the beginning of a journal. It also has a Q&A section that serves as an invitation to connect with the author, who already mentors many children in the school system.
An extensive vocabulary serves as a factual backup of terminologies that are not always familiar to a young girl.
Many adults are not prepared for or even comfortable discussing issues like those dealt with in this book, so it serves as a valuable dialogue tool for adults who may say to their child: ‘Read this and let’s discuss it afterwards.”
Many adults have expressed the wish that they had had the information in this book when they were 9-12 years old.
